Small Considerations

I have been considering doing some sort of writing project for a good while now. My studies at university used to provide a good outlet for any creative impulses that I might feel in the writing domain, as any sort of philosophy course requires a great deal of critical reading and writing as a matter of course. I can’t recall any significant amount of writing that I have done since that time, and it is far past time for that to change.

With that sentiment in mind, I decided to travel back to the early aughts and create a small niche on the World Wide Web where I could share my thoughts on whatever happens to catch my attention. My intention is to share small essays on current issues in politics, economics, world events, and technology that provide historical and social context, and use that context to frame my own thoughts and opinions on the issue.

It is important to note that this project will contain a great deal of exactly that – my own thoughts and opinions. I will write an About Me post shortly that will contain greater detail, but here’s the short version: I am a young man who currently works in the tech industry as a security analyst. I started college as a biochemistry major, switched to philosophy, but never completed my degree. When I was younger – an amusing, yet accurate statement – I was very conservative, and considered myself something of a libertarian. It is safe to say that I am now much more sympathetic to what would generally be considered liberal politics, and would probably be considered quite radical by many political standards.

With that caveat in mind, when I am outlining an issue and trying to provide context, I will do my best to give an unbiased overview of what has actually occurred. That does not mean to “present both sides,” as it were – anti-vaccination rhetoric for example thrives when it is given legitimacy by being presented side by side with scientific research showing the efficacy of vaccination. One is not the same caliber as the other, but I digress. If you read my bio and find yourself asking, “Why would I read anything written by someone with so blatant a bias?” Fair! It is my opinion that nothing can truly be written without bias, and so I choose to be up front and honest about my own, so you can make your own determination as to the worth of my work.

As this is a hobby project, I don’t really have any sort of strict schedule in mind, but I will likely try to post once or twice a week. If there is something you would like me to write about, feel free to leave a comment or shoot me a note at the email address on my contact page. A note about comments – any sort of slurs or threats will not be tolerated, but apart from that knock yourself out. If you would like to read more structured work, I will dig out some essays that I have written in the past (no judgement!) and post them somewhere on here.
